Queen of Herbs “Tulsi”

Tulsi is the Queen of Herbs. Since ancient times, it is treated as sacred herb in the Indian Hindu Mythology. It can be seen in every temple and holy place in India. Infact, majority of residences in India surely have small Tulsi plant as the residents have a strong belief that this aromatic plant absorbs all the negative energy and releases positive energy turning the house of four walls into pious home.


Tulsi Plant- This medicinal plant is usually 30-60 cms long. It has hairy stems. The leaves are either green or purple in colour. The green leaves Tulsi plant is known as ‘Laxmi Tulsi’ / ‘Rama Tulsi’ while the purple leaves Tulsi plant is called as ‘Krishna Tulsi’. The leaves of both variant are oval in shape having the length upto 5 cms. This holy plant gives very small purple colour flowers that grows together on the lengthen raceme (raceme is an un-branched stalk that has very small flowers in the group of 4-5. The flowers are so tiny that it cannot be plucked from the raceme). It is also known as Tulsi inflorescences. It grows on the top of the plant branch. Each and every part of the plant is strongly scented and is surely used for more than one purpose. Sticky black and moist soil is ideal for growing healthy Tulsi plant.

Usage- Tulsi plant is cultivated widely across India. Apart from the religious purpose it is extensively used in beauty therapies and also for curing many health related problems. It is a most important herb in all the Ayurvedic treatments. It is far and wide used for curing the regular troubles like common colds, mouth ulcers, headaches, stomach disorders and inflammation. Some of the acute ailments like diabetes, heart problems, various forms of poisoning and malaria are also controlled to far extend through this majestic Indian Basil. Aside from it use for ayurvedic remedies, it does wonders for beauty related issues. Essential oil extracted from this splendid plant does wonders for skin. Regular massage with Tulsi oil heals all the left over marks of pimples and restores the skin colour (especially from the tanned skin).

Few amazing uses are – Dry Tulsi leaves and later mix it with grains to protect the stored grains from insects and worms. Fresh Tulsi leaves are put in the drinking water to purify it naturally and also to enhance the taste of plain water. At the time of teething, put the 5-6 fresh leaves together on the teething place, it would help the teeth to come out faster with the reduced pain.
